The Play Party is the kids birthday party setup built around running about. A bouncing castle or a trampoline arrives with a kids minder, and around it we set a tent dressed to the theme, kids Chiavari chairs, one for every child, and dressed tables. Each guest gets themed plates, cups, napkins, a party hat and a mask, a water bottle with a themed label and a gift box of goodies to carry home. A single-board balloon backdrop and a decorated cake table finish the corner where the candles get blown out. You choose the theme and the number of kids; the rest comes on the truck.

Castle or trampoline?

Pick the one that fits your children and your lawn. A castle takes a small group at once, which keeps a crowd of guests busy. A trampoline is a one-at-a-time toy: University Hospitals in Cleveland advise one jumper only, because most trampoline injuries happen when two or more share it, and usually to the smallest. What it costs, and the size worth knowing about

Ten kids is KSh 22,000. Twenty is KSh 34,000, and that size brings two extras the smaller ones do not: Mr Clown running party games, and face painting. Hired on their own they cost KSh 6,000 and KSh 6,000. So if your list is sixteen or seventeen, price the twenty-kid size before you add a clown separately. From twenty-five kids balloon art joins in; thirty-five is KSh 45,500. Transport is a separate line, and a 50% deposit holds the date.

Picking a theme

Superheroes, pups and rescue, safari, princesses, a snow princess, Mickey and Minnie: those six are the ones parents pick most, and each one sets the colours of the tent, the party ware, the bottle labels and the backdrop. Is the birthday child into something else? Dinosaurs, football, a favourite cartoon? Type it in when you book and it goes onto your quote with the package. Name the characters, the colours and the birthday number; the more you tell us, the closer the table gets to what they are hoping for.

A cheap kids party that still feels like a party

Most of what makes a kids party expensive is the venue and the food. A Play Party happens on your own lawn, so there is no hall to pay for. Snacks, juice and the cake are yours, which keeps the spend where you can see it. If you want something sweet on the side, popcorn or candy floss can be added to the quote.

On the day

We arrive well before the guests. The castle gets pegged down and its blower switched on, which is why we ask for flat ground and a plug point close by. Tell us where the nearest socket is when you book. The minder watches the equipment. A parent watches the children. Daylight is the best time for play, roughly 10am to 6pm, and the hire runs 24 hours, so an early set-up eats nothing. Then, once the last guest has gone home with a gift box, we take it all down.
